MV Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram, Chennai is a 50 years old Super-specialty hospital for patients with diabetes and its complications. It was established by late Prof. M. Viswanathan, Doyen of Diabetology in India. The growth and development of diabetology as a distinct sub-discipline of medicine was largely due to his untiring efforts. The letters M.V. stand for his name and the traditions in work culture and professionalism bequeathed by the Founder Director, Prof. M. Viswanathan, to the institutions established by him. Patients are referred to the hospital from all over India and the neighbouring countries.

Diabetes Research Centre is one of the foremost “Centres of Excellence” in the field of Diabetes Research and undertakes basic and clinical research in its discipline.
Prof. M. Viswanathan who has been acknowledged as the "Father of Diabetology" in India passed away on 1st March 1996 after carrying a relentless crusade in the areas of diabetes care and research for 50 years. We briefly highlight his achievements and place on record his contributions as a clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator. The centres of Excellence viz., Diabetes Research Centre and M.V. Hospital for Diabetes established by him with his vast knowledge and wide professional experience, as an internationally recognised leading research scientist in diabetes will endure as standing monuments to his memory and greatness.
Dr. Vijay Viswanathan is the Managing Director of M.V. Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetes Research Centre, Royapuram, Chennai, India, a WHO Collaborating Centre for Education, Research and Training in Diabetes. He has over 100 original publications in Diabetic Nephropathy and Diabetic Foot and presented several papers on these subjects in various National and International Forums and also organized National and International Workshops in these fields. He helped establishing “Diabetic Foot Society of India” and is its Joint Secretary now. He authored the Kidney Section of the Global Diabetes Guidelines of International Diabetes Federation. From the API, he has received the Boehringer Knoll Junior Lectureship in Diabetes in 1995, Dr. J. N. Berry Award for other specialities in 1997, Hoechst Senior Lectureship in Diabetes in 2005, Dr. B. R. Sengupta Oration Gold Medal in 2006 from API (West Bengal). His father late Prof. M. Viswanathan has held the record for organising the maximum number of APICON’s in Chennai in 1961 – 1962, 1972 – 1973 and in 1978 – 1979.
He has been honoured by the Royal College of Physicians London with a F.R.C.P. degree for his excellent contributions in the field of Diabetes, Diabetic Foot and Diabetes Kidney. An honour of “Vocational Excellence Award” has also been conferred on him by the Rotary Club of Adyar. He has been elected as Chairman Association of Physicians of India – Tamil Nadu State Chapter.
